Spotlight on Rescue: Supporting the Mission of

B & Let Live Project

At Dog Mom Magazine, we love highlighting organizations that go above and beyond for dogs and the people who love them. This month, we’re proud to shine a light on B & Let Live Project, a rescue dedicated to bridging the gap between human well-being and animal welfare.

Their mission is rooted in compassion, education, and advocacy working every day to create a world where all dogs are valued, protected, and given the chance to thrive.

A Commitment to Education and Responsible Pet Ownership

One of the core pillars of B & Let Live Project is community education. Through workshops, resources, and outreach programs, they empower pet parents with the knowledge they need to provide loving, responsible care.

From the importance of spaying and neutering to understanding a dog’s emotional and physical needs, the organization focuses on helping adopters and owners build healthy, lifelong bonds with their pets. Their message is simple but powerful: Adopt, Don’t Shop.

Advocating for “Pit Bull”-Type Dogs

B & Let Live Project is especially passionate about addressing the unfair stigma surrounding “pit bull”-type dogs. These pups are often misunderstood and discriminated against due to harmful stereotypes and Breed-Specific Legislation (BSL).

Through advocacy, awareness campaigns, and education, the organization works tirelessly to debunk myths and show the world what dog moms already know: dogs should be judged by their hearts, not their labels.

They believe every dog regardless of breed or appearance deserves a loving home and a fair chance at happiness.

Supporting Adopters and Pet Parents

Adoption doesn’t end when a dog goes home. B & Let Live Project offers continued support to adopters and pet owners, helping them navigate training, behavior, and everyday care.

By providing guidance and encouragement, they ensure families feel confident and prepared, setting both humans and dogs up for long-term success.

Making an Impact Through Community Support

What makes this rescue even more inspiring is how their community rallies behind their mission. Proceeds from magazine subscriptions and fundraising initiatives are directed toward rescue organizations like B & Let Live Project.

In fact, this recent feature helped raise $1,200 to support their lifesaving work proof that when dog lovers come together, real change happens.

Every dollar goes toward medical care, rehabilitation, food, training, and finding forever homes for dogs in need.

Why This Matters to Dog Moms Everywhere

As dog moms, we know our pups are family. Supporting organizations like B & Let Live Project means standing up for dogs who haven’t yet found their forever people.

It means advocating for compassion over fear, education over misinformation, and love over judgment.

Whether you’re adopting, volunteering, donating, or simply sharing their mission, every action helps build a kinder future for dogs everywhere.

How You Can Help

Want to get involved? Here are a few ways you can support rescue organizations like B & Let Live Project:

Consider adopting your next furry family member

Volunteer your time or skills

Donate to support medical and care expenses

Share their mission on social media

Educate others about responsible pet ownership

Together, we can make a difference one paw at a time.

Where Love Lives, Fear Cannot Stay: Lisa, Nala, and Ellee

For Lisa, love is not an abstract idea. It has fur, four paws, and a presence so grounding that fear simply cannot survive in the same space. Her dogs, Nala and Ellee, are not just companions—they are extensions of her heart and her soul, living reminders of truth, unconditional love, and the quiet power of choosing peace even when life feels wildly out of control.

When life gets heavy, Nala and Ellee ground Lisa. When life flows more easily, they remind her to pause and be grateful. With them, she is brought back to the present moment again and again—the only place where healing actually happens. They embody a kind of love so steady and pure that fear loses its grip. In their presence, Lisa is reminded of something essential: fear cannot exist where love is fully present.

That truth was forged during one of the hardest seasons of Lisa’s life.

There was a time not long ago when Lisa stayed in a relationship she knew was not safe or healthy. Shame wrapped tightly around her. She felt isolated, trapped, and powerless to leave. In that darkness, Nala never left her side. She stayed close through the tears, gently licking Lisa’s face when the pain became too much. Nala did not judge. She did not question. She simply loved—steadfastly, quietly, without condition.

It was in that love that Lisa began to feel safe again. Safe enough to see herself clearly. Safe enough to gather the courage to walk away. Nala’s unwavering presence helped Lisa remember her own worth and, perhaps most importantly, taught her how to love herself and put herself first. Nala represents Lisa’s heart—a heart that broke, but also healed, and emerged stronger for having survived.

When Lisa was finally free, she opened her life to Ellee.

Ellee arrived as something entirely different—a free spirit untouched by fear. Where Nala carried the depth of healing, Ellee brought lightness. She represents Lisa’s soul: open, expansive, and unafraid. With Ellee, fear simply dissolves. Together, Nala and Ellee serve as living reminders of a promise Lisa made to herself—that she will never abandon herself again.

This wisdom doesn’t stay at home; it moves with Lisa into the world.

As a professor of occupational therapy, Lisa brings Nala and Ellee with her into the classroom. Their presence immediately shifts the space. Students feel safer. More at ease. More open. The nervous system softens in their company, creating the conditions where real learning and healing can occur. Lisa knows this instinctively—our human nervous systems learn best when we feel safe, seen, and loved.

She also brings her girls into public spaces where connection is quietly being sought—coffee shops, bookstores, everyday places where people are hungry for meaning without always knowing how to ask for it. Nala and Ellee draw people in naturally. Conversations unfold. Stories are shared. People speak about their lives and what matters most to them. In these moments, healing happens in the simplest, most human way—through presence and connection.

For Lisa, this is the heart of occupational therapy: engaging people in activities that are meaningful to them. It is where purpose lives. It is where healing begins.

Nala and Ellee are more than part of Lisa’s life—they are teachers, healers, and living proof that love is both refuge and strength. Through them, Lisa has learned that peace of mind is always a choice, that fear loses its power in the presence of love, and that no matter how broken a heart may feel, it is always capable of healing.

And together, they walk forward—grounded, brave, and whole.

There are some dogs whose presence quietly transforms the world around them. Stella is one of those rare souls.

To Mary, what stands out most about Stella isn’t just her beauty or her playful energy—it’s her profoundly sweet spirit. Stella moves through life brimming with joy, but she is happiest when she’s connecting. With people. With other dogs. With anyone willing to meet her gentle gaze and accept her affection. Watching Stella light up when she greets friends, meets someone new, or plays with another pup fills Mary and her husband with a deep, unmistakable happiness—the kind that lingers long after the moment has passed.

A Sweet Soul That Changes Every Room: Mary and Stella

Because Stella thrives on connection, Mary and her husband intentionally build their days around sharing that joy. They take her everywhere she can safely socialize and simply be herself—strolling through parks, wandering Home Depot aisles, visiting pet stores, exploring Peddler’s Village, and even stopping by the veterinarian’s office, a place Stella absolutely loves. Wherever she goes, she draws people in. Strangers smile. Conversations start. Hands reach down for gentle hellos. Stella meets every interaction with the same loving enthusiasm, as if each person is already a friend.

Being Stella’s dog mom means living surrounded by love. Stella is a constant reminder of how powerful simple kindness can be—how affection, presence, and openness can soften even the hardest days. Sharing Stella’s sweet soul with others and watching her bring smiles to people’s faces brings Mary immense joy.

Stella doesn’t just brighten rooms; she changes the emotional temperature of a space, making it warmer, softer, and more human.

Stella also inspires Mary to live more fully. With her playful spirit, quiet bravery, and endless curiosity, Stella approaches the world as something to be explored rather than feared. She turns ordinary days into little adventures and encourages Mary to do the same—to try new things, visit new places, and remain open to what might unfold next. Together, they embrace life with affection and persistence, finding meaning in the everyday.

That presence has mattered more than ever during a season of deep loss. After the passing of Mary’s father-in-law in June, grief settled heavily over their home. Through the pain and healing, Stella has been a constant source of comfort in ways words can’t fully capture. She shows up every day with unwavering love—always excited to see them, always gentle, always present. On the darkest days, when smiling feels impossible, Stella somehow finds a way to spark laughter, quietly reminding them that love and joy can coexist with grief.

Beyond home, Stella also plays an essential role in Mary’s professional life.

As a realtor with HomeStarr Realty, Mary values the flexibility and independence of building her own business. One of the greatest gifts of that freedom is time—time to be present with Stella, who grounds her throughout the day. Whether it’s stepping outside to enjoy the sunshine, taking a midday break, or simply slowing down to be fully present, Stella reminds Mary to pause and recharge. That balance keeps her energized, focused, and centered as she pursues work she is truly passionate about.

Stella is more than a companion. She is a source of healing, a spark of joy, and a daily lesson in leading with sweetness. Through love, loss, work, and everyday moments, Stella’s gentle soul remains a steady light—proof that sometimes the most powerful inspiration comes on four paws, with an open heart and an endless capacity to love.

On Both Ends of the Leash: Carrie, Holly, Bear, and a Life Guided by Love

For Carrie, loving animals was never a question—it was a calling. As a veterinarian, her life has been shaped by compassion, responsibility, and an unshakable belief in the bond between people and their pets. Over the years, that belief has been reinforced again and again, not just through her work, but through the seven dogs who have walked beside her through every chapter of her life.

Two of those dogs belonged to her childhood, offering early lessons in loyalty and care before she ever left home. One came with her into adulthood, accompanying her through veterinary school and the profound transitions into marriage and motherhood. And three more have shared in everything that followed—each dog marking a season of growth, challenge, and joy.

One of the most defining moments of Carrie’s life came at just 22 years old, when she lost her mother in a tragic house fire. It was the only period in her life when she did not have a dog of her own. Grief and uncertainty settled in deeply. During that time, while living near Pittsburgh where she grew up, her sister’s Lab puppy became an unexpected source of comfort—a warm presence during days that felt unbearably heavy.

A year later, when Carrie moved to Philadelphia to begin veterinary school, the very first thing she did was bring home a Lab puppy of her own. That dog became her constant. Through long nights of studying, through the pressure of becoming a doctor, through the quiet fear of learning how to be an adult in a world that suddenly felt unfamiliar, her dog was there. On the hardest days, when the idea that “each day is a gift” felt distant or abstract, that dog gave Carrie purpose simply by needing her. Feeding her. Walking her. Loving her.

Throughout her career, Carrie has witnessed a truth she holds close to her heart: dogs save people far more often than the other way around.

Today, that truth lives with her in the form of Holly and Bear—the two easygoing, joyful dogs who now share her home. With four human children grown and flown, Holly and Bear are daily reminders that being needed never stops. They bring grounding, purpose, and a gentle insistence on presence. They don’t worry about what comes next or measure fulfillment by future milestones. Watching them, Carrie is reminded that life is happening right now.

Her favorite moment of the day reflects that simplicity. In the quiet of the morning, coffee in hand, she greets the day with kisses from Holly and Bear—small gestures that somehow set everything right before the world begins asking anything of her.

Carrie is quick to acknowledge the richness of her life. She is the youngest of five siblings who have always shown up for her. She is married to a husband she calls her true ride-or-die. She is the proud mother of four remarkable children. And woven through every chapter are animals—seven beloved dogs, countless cats, and a lifetime of connection that has shaped who she is.

Professionally, Carrie owns a small animal hospital staffed by six veterinarians and a dedicated team of twenty-five. It is a place built on conscience, not corporate pressure. The hospital answers not to private equity or shareholders, but to clients, community, and the quiet conviction of doing what is right for animals and the people who love them. Every day, Carrie has the privilege of nurturing those bonds—both between pets and their families, and among the compassionate professionals who care for them.

Over time, however, she began to notice something that unsettled her deeply. Many dogs and cats were ending up in shelters or rescues not because they weren’t loved, but because their families couldn’t afford veterinary care. The idea that financial hardship alone could break a loving bond never sat right with her.

In 2018, while visiting Sacramento, Carrie met a veterinarian running a clinic dedicated to caring for pets owned by people experiencing homelessness. The encounter changed everything. During the COVID pandemic, Carrie founded a 501(c)(3) nonprofit called Holly Helps, named after her yellow Lab. The organization focuses on providing veterinary care for pets living with their families in Philadelphia’s pet-friendly shelters.

Her hope is both simple and powerful: by helping people keep their pets, she believes we help them hold onto purpose, dignity, and stability—foundations that matter deeply when rebuilding a life. Pets are family. Preserving that bond can change lives on both ends of the leash.

Carrie is careful not to romanticize hardship. She knows that her hardest moments may still have been easier than someone else’s best days. But the loss of her mother remains a defining grief, one that shaped her understanding of loyalty, presence, and love. In the wake of that loss, it was her dog who helped her navigate a new city, meet new people, and find her footing. Her dog sat beside her while she studied, walked with her as she explored unfamiliar streets, and stayed through every transformation—into a veterinarian, a mother, and a woman finding her place in the world.

She never once considered leaving that dog behind. And that, Carrie believes, is the lesson pets teach us best.

They don’t just share our lives during the easy moments. They walk beside us through uncertainty, grief, growth, and change. Their quiet presence anchors us when nothing else can. It’s a lesson Carrie has carried with her ever since—and one she continues to live every day with Holly and Bear at her side.
